Week 2

Library Modules

From library modules, I learned that students can find scholarly journals that they need through UCI Libraries website. I used to search information by using google. However, most of the cases, the first few results were either from Wikipedia or some other non-authoritative websites. In UCI Libraries, I can find more academic and also authoritative articles. From today’s class, I also learned that I can find the eBook, and PDF online. If there is no eBook online, I will be able to find the book in library by using the call number.

I have not decided what topic that I am going to research, so I just found something about Why cats and dogs think different about you. Because I am interested in James Serpell’s theory about cat, I searched his name and cat as the key word in UCI Libraries and came out one result. From the result, it has some information about authors, subject terms, and abstract. According to the abstract, I am able to know what is this article talking about, and decide use it or not.

This week we read Carl Safins' "Trumpets of Elephants" which make me learn a lot of knowledge about animals. Human’s perspective of the world is not the real whole world; animal and human’s behaviors are similar but act in different way. Even animal cannot tell us what they are thinking, they have the same basic brain as human. According to brain scans, we can know that animal have the human emotions and human also have the animal emotions. Elephants like being with other elephants, they live and move together. Elephants' memory is very good, the experiences that they remember are very helpful for survival. Therefore, elephants will follow the oldest female who know more survival knowledge and experience.

​Research

I have not decide about my topic yet, but I am interesting in a few topics about the animal behavior and their emotions. I think animals and human are similar but humans and animals do not belong to the same species so that humans cannot fully understand the animals behavior and mind. Animal have human emotions, they feel happy, sad, angry and afraid just like human. I want to understand animal mood or what they try to express through their movements.
